CHIversity 2018 Programme

12Apr - by Rosie - 0 - In #CHIversity

After having a long consideration about what it means to be truly feminist, fempower.tech has embraced the role of constant evolution; taking a stop to pause and consider where we are going, and who are we including along the way. Over the past year within our respective research areas, our understanding of new (and old) theories has grown massively to the extent where we are incorporating new conceptualisations of oppression, and systems of power. As a result, we made additional effort to ensure that our definition of equality and diversity went well beyond simply elevating discussions of the feminine gender, and onto more inclusive discussions that directly address sexuality, race, disability, age and so forth.

We have long identified with the term ‘intersectional’, but we found this more difficult to put into practise within such a conference space whereby only a few papers addressing traditionally-coined ‘feminist’ issues could be addressed. This year, at CHI 2018 we feel due to the expanse of papers that address the multitude of different issues relating to individual characteristics and socio-economic factors, our CHIversity programme can continue to grow further into something that inspires to be inclusive to everyone.

This schedule is a living schedule, meaning that it will continuously grow throughout the conference so if you would like to have your paper added, or know of a paper that you feel represents what is good about inclusivity at CHI 2018 please DM us on twitter @fempowertech, or send an email to Rosie Bellini at r.f.bellini@newcastle.ac.uk.

Make sure you don’t miss our Special Interest Group (Feminist HCI: Taking Stock, Moving Forward, and Engaging Community) at 16:30 on Monday, Room: 514A & our alt.chi paper (#CHIversity: Implications for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Campaigns) addressing our previous years’ campaign at 9:40 on Thursday, Room 516D.
