We’ve put together a call for papers for a special issue of the Feminist Theory journal, and we’d love for you to contribute! We’re looking for abstracts at this stage (by 15th of October) and we’ll select 6-8 of these for paper contributions of 6,000-8,000 words. We’re expecting to set the paper deadline around March 2019 at the earliest – but we need your abstracts first in order to write the special issue proposal for the journal.

Feminist Theory Special Issue Call for Papers
Title – Feminist Human Computer Interaction: Working at the Intersection of Feminist Theory and Digital Innovation

We are putting together a proposal for a Special Issue of Feminist Theory (http://journals.sagepub.com/home/fty).
Human-Computer Interaction is the study of how humans interact with computers and other digital technologies. In recent years, practice-based HCI research has begun to move into real-world settings and justice-oriented spaces. At the same time, there has also been a growing interest in HCI theories, including a growing number of interpretations of feminist theories, methodologies, methods, or tools.
While there has been a growing body of work addressing concerns of mis- or under-represented communities, this work is often marginalised or sensationalised. Some scholars are working to bring feminist theory, thought, methods, and values into the field of HCI. This work includes the development of activist campaigns for more inclusive and welcoming conference venues, the formalisation of a Feminist-HCI community, and the increase of publications that recognise their links to feminist theories.
This Special Issue brings forward alternative approaches to feminist thought, theory, and HCI. It will build on existing work in HCI and associated disciplines, such as Design or Science and Technology Studies (STS), to further explore the potential of feminist theories in the mutable landscape of digital innovation. We will unpick some of the theoretical nuances of feminist thought as it is understood and made manifest through the design, development, and evaluation of digital technologies. This Special Issue will build on on-going debates, while also opening up spaces of inclusion to address the opportunities and challenges of designing technologies fairly to bring about social change.
We invite researchers, practitioners, and activists working at the intersection of feminist theory and digital innovation to contribute to this Special Issue. We are particularly interested in contributions that address the following issues:
– The intersection of feminist research and feminist activism
– The particular implications of framing and understanding of feminisms through digital technologies
– Explorations into the ways in which feminist theories affect research and design methods in participatory projects working in digital innovation
– Case studies of applications of feminist theories in HCI projects
To ensure appropriate inclusion in these alternatives in digital innovation, we are particularly interested in hearing from early career researchers, activists, and practitioners from non-western contexts, with working class, ethnic minority, or LGBT+ identities, as well as those with disabilities or chronic illnesses.
