David Green

I began my career as a graphic designer before training as a filmmaker, specialising in digital video editing, visual effects and compositing. From 2004, I worked as an editor on a variety of scientific programmes, particularly medical documentaries. During this time I was also able to develop my skills as a photographer and cinematographer. In 2006, whilst completing a MA in Film Studies at Newcastle University (on influences and authorship in the context of documentary filmmaking), I joined Culture Lab, where I eventually became a senior research technician. In this role, I expanded my technical skills in diverse areas, including motion-capture, biomechanics, programming, digital fabrication and lo/no-budget filmmaking. During this phase of my career, I worked on a huge variety of technical, artistic and research projects with academics, businesses and public sector organisations, as well as publishing, exhibiting, speaking at conferences and attending and organising workshops.

I joined Open Lab (then known as the Digital Interaction Group) in 2012 as a Creative Exchange PhD student. In this role, I have been exploring how technology can be used to empower citizens and communities (particularly those with traditionally non-technical backgrounds) to participate in documentary film production processes and - latterly - how this translates into interactive distribution formats.

I have a personal interest in wildlife, sustainability and the natural world and I am particularly interested in grassroots documentaries that address these topics.
