Rachel Clarke

Until leaving Open Lab in 2016, I worked as a research associate exploring socially engaged arts approaches to participatory design in relation to place and ageing as part of MyPlace.

My PhD focus was on technology design for sharing digital media in during transitions and disruptions, in the context of migration and violence. I worked in a long-term embedded way with charities who support Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Refugee (BAMER) women, combining speculative design thinking and making with digital literacy skills. Informed by performance, narrative and community-based arts, we explored digital storytelling and digital portraits, developing multi-sensory ways in which photographs might be shared sensitively through technology using the photo-parshiya; a digital photo-album. This has led to a long-term partnership project BAM! Sistahood project encouraging dialogue around the future of digital infrastructure, archives and access.

I have a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Art from Nottingham Trent University and an MA in Visual Culture from Lancaster University. Prior to undertaking my PhD at Open Lab, I have worked as a freelance digital artist, facilitator and project manager working with heritage, arts and theatre organisations nationally and internationally on participatory engagement with technology.
