Bio

Sandra Almeida is a PhD researcher in Human–Computer Interaction at Newcastle University, examining how digital exclusion is being reshaped in the age of artificial intelligence. Her research introduces the concept of the structural digital divide, exploring how institutional practices, economic constraints, and emerging technologies influence who is able to participate meaningfully in the digital economy.

With over 35 years of experience across higher education, heritage, and community innovation, Sandra brings a practice-based perspective to her work, grounded in long-standing engagement with organisations across the North East of England. Her research combines empirical studies with sector-based inquiry, including work on digital transformation in heritage, veterinary practice, and wellbeing.

Alongside her doctoral research, Sandra explores the use of digital platforms, immersive environments, and VR to support mental wellbeing, particularly within veterinary contexts where stress and burnout are increasingly recognised. She is interested in how technologies can be designed not only to function efficiently, but to be trusted, inclusive, and genuinely usable in real-world settings.

Her work sits at the intersection of AI, digital inclusion, and social impact, with a focus on how technological systems can be shaped to support more equitable and resilient futures.
